From a 40-year-old woman from North Carolina who underwent a thyroid lobectomy using the daVinci Surgical System: "In 2008, I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism from a hyperfunctioning thyroid nodule. A few months later an ultrasound guided biopsy revealed a possible follicular neoplasm, making it impossible to completely rule out thyroid cancer. After multiple consultations with some of the best doctors in the country I was given three treatment options: surgery, radioactive idodine treatment (RAI), or I could just wait and see. Wanting to avoid a large unsightly scar on my neck or the long term risks of RAI, I decided to take my chances an wait it out. My wait and see strategy lasted about a year until a follow up ultrasound revealed the nodule had grown.
Now I was forced to address the lump growing in my neck, which at times caused me discomfort. Knowingly putting radiation in my body did not settle well with my psyche nor would it provide the peace of mind my family and I were seeking, to once and for all conclude if my nodule was cancerous or not. The only sure way to find out what I was dealing with was to surgically remove the nodule. After numerous consultations with several surgeons I knew a traditional thyroid lobectomy would leave me with a scar on my neck and a not so pleasant recovery.
I am a makeup wearing, surgically enhanced girly girl and a scar on my neck was just not gonna work! I then did what I've done hundreds of times before when in search of answers, I went to the web. A few clicks later I was reading about Dr. Ronald Kuppersmith of Texas ENT and Allergy located in College Station, Texas which proved to be a real blessing.
A month later my incredibly supportive husband and I were boarding a plane to College Station, Texas where Dr. Kuppersmith using the daVinci robot was going to remove my thyroid nodule without the traditional unsightly neck incision. The incision was made under my arm and the daVinci robot was used to remove my thyroid nodule. Recovery is much quicker with robot assisted thyroid surgery. Great, so this meant I would be back on my feet sooner to return the scarves and turtlenecks. I wouldn't need to cover my neck incision and I would be back spending time with my husband and children.
While the daVinci robot is a mechanical marvel...if it wasn't for the incredible skill and training of Dr. Kuppersmith and his wonderful staff of medical professionals, this would not be the success story it is. Dr. Kuppersmith himself is one of the most personable and knowledgeable doctors I have ever been treated by. This is most evident in the way he thoroughly explains the procedure to you during the pre op consults which is a true confidence builder going into surgery. Dr. Kuppersmith's medical prowess and trade craft exemplifies the power and benefits of man and machine!
The surgery went smoothly and my thyroid nodule was successfully removed. The staff at the College Station Medical Center was wonderful and tolerated my drug induced crankiness for the one night I was there. In a matter of days I was back on my feet minus the uncomfortable and unsightly bump on my neck. Four days after surgery I was home again with my family. Today the only evidence of my surgery is a barely noticeable scar under my arm. I feel great and I am certain I made the right decision to have the surgery by Dr. Kuppersmith using the daVinci robot."
